Terms of use

The terms for reading, replying and writing on WoolMap.

Last updated:

These terms apply to everyone who uses WoolMap: readers, people who reply and invited writers. By using the site you agree to them. We have tried to keep them short and readable.

The service

WoolMap is a network of writer profiles about making things by hand. Reading is free and needs no account. Writer accounts are given by invitation only; there is no public sign-up. Each writer has a profile at /handle/ with categories, posts, topics and an RSS feed.

Reading and replying

You may read, link to and share WoolMap pages freely. When you reply to a post, you are responsible for what you write. Guest replies are reviewed by moderators before they appear, and we may decline or remove any reply, for example one that is off-topic or breaks the Community guidelines. Unapproved replies are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Writing on WoolMap

If you have a writer account:

  • You keep ownership of everything you publish.
  • You grant WoolMap permission to host, display and distribute your content, including through RSS feeds, for as long as it is published here.
  • You are responsible for your own content, including having the rights to the text, photos and patterns you post.
  • You may link to your own website and to sources; links in posts are ordinary links.
  • You can ask us to remove individual posts or your entire profile at any time through the contact page.

Writer accounts

Writer accounts are personal and are created by invitation. Keep your sign-in details to yourself and tell us through the contact page if you think someone else has used your account. We may suspend or close an account that is used to break these terms, and we may decline to issue invitations without giving a reason.

Feeds and reuse

Posts are available through RSS so that readers can follow writers in the apps they prefer. A feed is a way to read, not a licence: copying, republishing or selling a writer’s posts, photos or patterns elsewhere requires that writer’s permission, unless the law allows it without permission. Short quotations with a link back to the original are fine.

Acceptable use

Everything published on WoolMap must follow the Community guidelines. In particular you must not use the site to publish illegal content, malware, phishing or deceptive links, harassment, hate or threats, other people’s private information, impersonation, plagiarism or copyright infringement, or sexual content involving minors. You must not try to disrupt the service, get around its anti-spam limits or access parts of it you are not authorised to use.

Moderation and removal

We may remove content, decline replies or close profiles that break these terms or the guidelines, or that we reasonably believe put readers or the service at risk. Where it makes sense we will explain why, but we are not obliged to host any particular content.

If you believe something on WoolMap infringes your copyright, contact us through the contact page with the topic “Copyright”. Include a link to the material, a description of your original work and how we can reach you. We review every complaint and remove material where appropriate.

Posts and profiles often link to writers’ own websites, shops and sources. Those sites are run by others; we do not control them and are not responsible for their content, products or privacy practices. If a link looks deceptive or harmful, please report it.

The service is provided “as is”

We work to keep WoolMap available and reliable, but the service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Content on the site is written by its writers and readers; we do not guarantee that it is accurate, complete or suitable for any purpose. Try new techniques on a swatch first.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, WoolMap and the team that runs it are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the site, from content published by others, or from the site being unavailable. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes to the service and these terms

We may change, pause or discontinue all or part of WoolMap. We may also update these terms; when we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
